St Mark’s is a centre of excellence; offering individualised, exceptional, multidisciplinary care for people with inflammatory bowel disease.

The IBD unit at St Mark’s aims to:

• Advance the clinical service to optimise patient experience
• Be at the forefront of improving existing therapies and improving novel therapies
• Develop predictors of disease course and response to therapy so that therapeutic options are personalised
• Advance the current understanding on the cause of the disease using links with microbiologists and immunologists within Imperial College

The research that is undertaken at St Mark’s Hospital in the field of inflammatory bowel disease is both dynamic and innovative.

Intestinal Regeneration and Rehabilitation

St Mark’s is currently one of only two national centres specialising in the area of intestinal regeneration and rehabilitation.

The Intestinal Regeneration Unit at St Mark’s and the Northwick Park Institute of Medical Research is developing pioneering research.

The ambition for the Intestinal Regeneration Unit is to provide the best multidisciplinary care for patients with intestinal failure.

There are a number of advances that will help to change the lives of patients with intestinal failure which include:

• Surgical techniques to lengthen the bowel
• New growth factors medications which stimulate bowel growth
• Intestinal transplantation and bowel regeneration using stem cells and tissue engineering
